Fortec DistributionName and job title: Craig Johnson, Business Unit Director

Company: Fortec Distribution Network

Category sponsored: Chairman’s Special Award

Your business: Fortec is a nationwide pallet network based in Watford Village, Northamptonshire. We have a network of over 85 transport companies throughout the UK and Ireland and employ more than 80 people in Northamptonshire.

Why have you chosen this particular category to sponsor and what aligns your business to the Northamptonshire Logistics Awards?

The Chairman’s Award recognises people who have overcome challenges, gone and above and beyond, and excelled in their field – we feel this reflects the values of Fortec and our approach to our customers and members.

What major challenges do you think the logistics sector/ your sector faces?

The logistics industry faces a huge workforce deficit. Young people, in particular, are not choosing to work in the sector and we have a real shortage of HGV drivers throughout the UK. The demand is greater than the people willing to work in the sector.

And how will your company tackle these challenges?

Fortec has an ethos of recruiting, developing and retaining its team so that it can grow from within. We will be launching a training academy to incorporate schemes such as Warehouse to Wheels and will look to expand our current Apprenticeship schemes to encourage more young people to choose a career in the logistics sector.

Can you share an unknown fact about your company?

Fortec Distribution Network is part of the GEODIS Group, the fourth largest logistics supplier in Europe, which is owned by SNCF, the state-owned French Rail Network which transports over 4 million passengers a day.

What country, other than the UK, is your business most closely aligned to?

As part of GEODIS, Fortec is aligned to the processes and the approach to business that has been established through our headquarters in Paris. We are also closely aligned with its ethos, which puts the customer at the centre of what we do. That ethos plays a large role in the way Fortec operates in the UK.

We want to encourage as many businesses in the logistics sector to enter these awards – what words of encouragement can you share with us? Why do you think these awards are so important?

The Northamptonshire Logistics Forum provides a great amount of support for local businesses within the sector. It is important to work with the local logistics community so we can all share best practice, benefit from the networking opportunities and continue to grow the sector within Northamptonshire.

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for a successful career and business?

Logistics is a full, fun and challenging environment to work in, and no two days are ever the same.

In three words what does Northamptonshire mean to you?
